Peak Goals: 2019 Manufacturing & Social Responsibility Report

Holding companies accountable for their products is the very reason Larry Penberthy founded Mountain Safety Research in 1969. An engineer and passionate mountaineer, Larry began testing the climbing gear of the day and publishing the results in his Mountain Safety Research newsletter. He believed in company integrity and transparency.

He also loved the world’s wild places and set out to build his gear to last as long as possible, so that excess resources needn’t be used up to replace it.

These principles still guide our company to this day. As a manufacturer of outdoor gear, we are committed to reducing our impact. As mountaineers, hikers, paddlers, bikers and explorers of this precious planet, we know it’s more critical than ever before.

To keep us accountable, we publish our Manufacturing & Social Responsibility Reports. These documents outline MSR’s priorities as we work to reduce our social and environmental impacts. They also allow us to track our progress and celebrate our accomplishments to date.

MSR has long been at the forefront of responsible manufacturing. We are a founding member of the Outdoor Industry’s Sustainability Working Group. We are also one of the first hard-good brands to voluntarily use the Higg Index, the industry’s first sustainability measurement tool.

By entering our business and manufacturing data into the Higg Index, we can calculate our sustainability performance in terms of our materials, chemical management, social practices, production, and other core competencies. We’re proud to say that each year, we’ve increased our Higg score.

Each of us on the MSR team strives to leave an increasingly positive handprint on the world around us. Collectively, as a leader in the outdoor industry, we believe it’s our responsibility to do so.

We hope you’ll explore this year’s report, and join us in some of our initiatives, like our fuel canister recycling program, which we are working earnestly to broaden.

Thanks for reading and we’ll see you in the mountains!
