Diversity Outdoors: Latina Trail Crew Rebuilds at Mt. Rainier

Since 2013, Latino Outdoors has worked to create a national community of leaders in conservation and outdoor education by expanding and amplifying the Latino experience in the outdoors. The nonprofit provides youth mentorship, expands outdoor access, and models responsible recreation across the United States.

In conjunction with Washington Trails Association, Latino Outdoors recently formed the Latina Trail Crew in Washington, a team of nine girls ranging in age from 13 to 16. The group embarked on a four-day journey in late July at Mt. Rainier National Park, rebuilding trails, exploring rivers, and discussing diversity in the outdoors. In total, each member of the Latina Trail Crew contributed over 30 volunteer hours to the national park, and left with knowledge of the park’s natural history, opportunities for careers in park service, and public land conservation.

The photos below, provided by Latino Outdoors Seattle Coordinator Michelle Piñon, share some of the highlights of their adventure. Piñon says she hopes that this trip has “merely planted a seed, a passion of the outdoors that will be further cultivated in years to come.” Equipment donations to the girls in the Latina Trail Crew by MSR and other businesses will ensure that the girls have the stoves, mess kits, and other gear needed to equip their future explorations.
