Mountaineering can be a selfish endeavor but there are programs out there that help combine one’s love for the summit with aiding a noble cause. Big City Mountaineer’s program, ‘Summit for Someone’ aims to improve the lives of under-served urban youth. Funds that are raised through SFS climbs allow Big City Mountaineers’ to lead transformational wilderness mentoring expeditions to thousands of urban youth across the country in need of “positive adult guidance in challenging and restorative environments.”
Under-resourced youth live in communities where the drop out rate among high school students is as high as 50%. Low graduation rates contribute to drug use, involvement in crime, violence, and poor health. Big City Mountaineers programs have a proven track record of improving integrity, self-esteem, decision-making abilities, and communication skills that keep kids healthy, active, and in school.
Keeping kids in school sounds like a good reason to send, doesn’t it? All S4S climbs are guided by professional guide services, they’ll also cover gear for the trip, making this climb for a cause program suitable for beginner and seasoned mountaineers.
