#48HourEpic Contest: MSR Employees’ Gear List

To achieve their ambitious 48-hour undertaking of climbing remote Glacier Peak and packrafting out, the three winners of MSR’s internal 48 Hour Epic contest had to pack some seriously ultralight gear. In all, their adventure totaled 35 miles of grueling bushwhacking, 12,800 feet of elevation gain, and several miles of wild packrafting in 48 hours car-to-car. Here’s a look at the gear that helped make their sufferfest a success:

MSR TrailShot Pocket-Sized Water Filter: 142 g (5 oz)

MSR TrailShot Pocket-Sized Water Filter

The impetus for our 48 Hour Epic contest, this tiny filter was engineered for fast-paced missions. Quick to deploy, it allows you to drink directly from water sources on the trail and fill up multiple vessels quickly—delivering an ultralight hydration solution that won’t slow you down.

MSR PocketRocket 2 Stove: 73 g (2.6 oz)

MSR PocketRocket 2 Stove

This next-generation ultralight backpacking stove delivers big-stove performance in a micro stove design. While it’s barely noticeable in your pack, its speed is impressive at camp—boiling 1 liter in just 3.5 minutes, so you get the hot calories you need to refuel after a grueling day in the mountains.

MSR Carbon Reflex 3 Tent: 1.03 kg (2 lb 4 oz)

MSR Carbon Reflex 3 Tent

Full tent protection at the weight of a tarp. The featherweight Carbon Reflex was engineered for sufferfest missions that demand protection from bugs and weather. With true-to-size room for three, it allows for the shut-eye required to refresh for another big day of climbing, rafting or enduring miles and miles of bushwacking.

MSR Big Titan Kettle: 160 g (6 oz)

MSR Big Titan Kettle

Titanium is more durable than aluminum and 45% lighter than steel. Made of this premium material, the Big Titan Kettle provided the high-volume water boiling capabilities needed in a seriously ultralight solution.

Alpacka Rafts—The Alpacka Series:  2.7-3 kg (6-7 lb)

Alpacka Raft

If you’re going to carry a personal boat on your back, these are the rigs to chose. Ultralight for their class, these durable packrafts are compact and easy to handle on challenging water.
