Backcountry Dog Etiquette

During a recent ski tour to Table Mountain in the Mount Baker backcountry, three friends and I rescued a lost dog. It was an hour before sunset on a cold December afternoon and there were no other people in sight when we spotted the shorthaired mutt searching for her owners. As the shivering, disoriented animal limped higher up the mountain, away from the parking lot, it became clear that something was wrong. One member of our group, Kirsten, attracted the timid dog with an avocado sandwich. Kirsten phoned the number we found on the dog’s identification tags and was able to get in touch with the owner, who was waiting in the cozy Heather Meadows lodge, about a 30-minute hike from our location. The dog was not able to run…

Worth the weight
Usually, I am running and trying to be as light as possible. Historically, I have used the black diamond ultra light poles. If you plan on stashing poles in your pack and not always using them, it's a nice feature. Then I started to carry a heavier back and do steeper and longer back country trips. These poles rocked my world. They are still very light weight and comfortable to use. The grip was perfect size so that I did not get fatigued in my hands. Best of all, I had total confidence in relying on the poles for support when I was making steep descents or traversing steep slopes- something I would not rely on the ultra lights for. Highly recommend these, and they will last forever!

Sturdy and great value
I bought these poles in prep for a two week trek in NM later this summer and am pleased with the purchase. Love being able to quickly adjust the length with the Surelock system. Only drawback is the little plastic wedge that controls the strap length is a little prone to slipping. Had to adjust them then really pound them in at home after the first trip.
